John Landis: Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Returning in 3D
'The Making of Thriller' finally coming to DVD, too!

CHUD writer Devin Faraci attended a Q&A session with director John Landis at the British Film Institute in London, where the director was showing off footage from his new car salesman documentary, Slasher. Afterward, the director fielded a series of questions about his more than 30 years of experience in the business, when the question of whether The Making of Thriller would ever be released to DVD was brought up.
Landis confirmed that progress is being made towards the DVD release of the short film. Legal disputes have repeatedly delayed its release, but the death of Michael Jackson has likely softened attitudes on all sides - and the huge success of recent Michael Jackson-related projects, including This Is It, may also be a factor.
He also confirmed that Jackson's family would like the video to be released in 3D. With televisions and Blu-Ray players capable of handling the format not exactly prominent in households yet, it's likely that the film will see a theatrical release.
However, is the video's 14-minute runtime enough to justify a theatrical release? It's unlikely that audiences will want to sit through an hour-long documentary on the making of the video as much as they will the video itself, so that may not be a viable option.
Faraci speculates that they may want to release a compilation of Jackson's videos in 3D if they want to go with a theatrical release that would justify the costs and bring in more revenue. Or, perhaps, they would want to pair it with a 3D re-release of Fantasia? That would be awesome!
